16th Lennox Longboard Classic 2013, Report & Results

Group Shot, Classic 2013

Last weekend the 3rd & 4th August, the 16th Lennox Longboard Classic 2013 was run at Lennox Main Beach, Lennox Head, as it has for the last 16 years. This longboarding surfing event has a reputation of being a relaxed grassroots layback surfing comp with the emphasis on having a good time & showing some talent on the longboard in sometimes difficult conditions. The event covered 9 divisions, ranging from Juniors U/18 to Over 60’s, Open Ladies to Old Malibu/ Loggers. 100 competitors took part from various parts of Australia & even NZ
We had 2 days of a sizable swell, generated from a low deep down in the Tasman, abating on Sunday, waves a metre plus & larger on the sets, High tide early working to a low tide around Midday, Lennox works better on the High water. Great Pristine sunny days with very favourable winds, it all came together well. Though 5 longboards were broken in the surf over the weekend events.
So Saturday was the heat rounds & though paddling out on 9ft plus boards was a challenge, some stylish longboarding was put to the test.
Saturday night the event had a competitors giveaway at the local, The Lennox Hotel, a Bintang Beer promo (One of the Events Major Sponsors) & 2 Longboards from Global Surfing Industries were given away. One to Kurt Hardy of Lennox Head, as he broke his in the heats on Saturday, a fully stoked junior & one a Mctavish to Mike Pimm of Cabarita. Saturday Night was rounded off with the Band Wilson Cooper Band, With band-members familiar with the Longboarding scene.

Sunday the swell had abated slightly, great conditions & semi finals & Finals were surfed in classic Lennox punchy beach waves & clean as.
Standout longboarders to note was the tussle between local Eric Walker from Ballina & Mike Pimm from Cabarita in the Over 50’s Final. Marg Bryant from Ballina in the Over 60’s Final, being the only female in a male dominated division, excelling & upstaging the Older crew of blokes in some ways.
The Standout surfing was in the Open 9ft Final with Lennox Head’s Ben Dickens showing some prowess in the waves with Great maneuvers, & a classic hang ten noseride, that won some worthy praise. His fellow competitors also put in the moves. So the spectators along the beachfront saw some great longboarding to finish the event.
The Event Presentation was at 3pm Sunday at the Lennox Hotel & a RAFFLE longboard was won by John Eddy from Lennox Head & the other Prize from the raffle, Lennox Beach Resort Accommodation Package won by Paul Tsickleas of Lennox Head.
The Event over the years has supported a number of organisations & we continue that with donations to, The Lennox Surf-lifesaving Club, The Disabled Surfing Association, NSW Cancer Council, The Rescue Helicopter Service & This year also to Club Lennox.
All events need Sponsors & Support & we thank all coming on board for the 2013 event, Both Major & small.
