The Old Guys Rule 13th Annual Lennox Longboard Classic 2010

Report from Wayne Booth, Lennox Longboarders Club

The event was held the weekend of August 7-8. Venue was the beachbreaks of Lennox Main, Lennox Head, and 100 longboarders competed over nine age and gender divisions.

Two pristine winter days presented predominately offshore to southeasterly winds, but challenging, variable swell size between one-to-1.5 metre, low tide dominated days. There were however some great waves of the banks on the higher tides.

A standout round, the 0ver 30?s semifinal, on Sunday morning at 7:40am on a higher tide, good punchy waves and down the line
Saturday was the bigger of the two days, with a punishing sandbank at low tide to contest around mid morning. Heats were completed and two lots of semis held in the afternoon, the Over 40s and 50s

Saturday night festivities were at the newly-revamped Lennox Hotel, a major sponsor. Competitor giveaways at 7:30pm, post telecast of the Australia v NZ rugby. Two longboards from Global Surf Industries were given to two competitors, being locals Greg Thomas and cadet-grommet Kurt Hardy ... and fully stoked was this grommet.
Mal & the Longboarders surf band played the place down into the night.

Standout results from the Cunningham family from Bundaberg, Queensland. Sons George and Ed coming first & second in the Junior Under 18s, George fifth in the Open Nines, while dad Glen secured second in the Over 30s and second in the Over 40s division.
Standout surfing in the final event, the Open Nine-foot final on Sunday, with Ben Dickens from Byron Bay the eventual winner in a quality final.

Sunday at 3pm the preso was conducted at the Lennox Hotel. The contest raffle 1st prize went to one lucky soul, from Lennox, Davis Peakes, winning a Walden carbon-fibred-rail longboard. Raffle proceeds to selected local and national charities, as per previous years.

With noteworthy sponsorship from Old Guys Rule clothing, surfboard distributor Global Surf Industries, Coca Cola, XXXX-Lager, to name a few. A hearty thankyou to the Lennox Hotel & all the local businesses that supported this years Classic. And of course thanks to the competitors for their support patronizing the event. This years classic was heralded as a great success, continuing an annual longboarding event for the Lennox area in the 2nd weekend of August.
